Laura shared in the Bulletin Board thread a wonderful story about getting her foot in the photography door. This is an abridged version of what she told us.
"I've fallen into a 'photo greeting card' business... I read an article in the local paper about a group that was trying to get a Farmers' Market started in town, I thought it was a wonderful idea so I volunteered... Being such a small group with so much to do (there are basically just 4 of us doing it) I've gotten pulled into doing so much more as well.
Four days before the start of the very first market we had NO vendors.. and a huge opening ceremony planned with two State Reps and the Senator coming to 'cut the ribbon' and the press to photograph the big day! So, I offered to print up some of my picturess and do a booth just so we would have at least ONE vendor... and it was a great success.. and much to my surprise my cards were VERY well received!!
The response was overwhelming... watching the peoples expressions as they oohed over my landscapes... and then their surprise when they ask where I got so many wonderful photographs and I tell them that I am the photographer... it has been absolutely wonderful... I'm not getting rich off of it... but just the encouragment, lovely comments and interaction has made it all worth it...
My cards and photos are now a fixture at the Farmers' Market and I've branched out to a couple of other 'tag sale' 'fun fair' type venues... and each week my sales have been increasing... I've made some awesome contacts and have gotten leads on several 'photo shoot' jobs, along with permission to enter previously 'off limits' properties anytime I like to take photos.. It's been really wonderful...
So.. my experience has been.. if you're thinking of doing something with your work.. DO IT... it has been so worth the experience! "
