"Utatamon GO!" Frequently Asked Questions

What is Utatamon GO!?
It's not just an attempt to hitch our wagon to the viral gaming hit of 2016, Utatamon GO! is the BIG PROJECT for Summer 2016. Past BIG PROJECTS have included Utata Breaks the Rules, Utata Goes Mobile, Utata Pays Homage, and Just One Thing.
It's not where you go, it's how you go. So said River Phoenix. Or possibly Keanu Reeves. It was definitely somebody better known for their beauty than their philosophical insight. For this summer's Utata Big Project we would like you to go not somewhere but to go something.
How should we go?
There are several ways you can go.
  1. Go Wild - Go Wild. Go Wild in the Country. Where snakes in the grass are absolutely free. It doesn't have to be snakes. It could be lions or tigers or bears. Oh my. For the Go Wild category we want you to take your camera out of the urban and back to nature. Greg would particularly welcome macros of spiders.
  2. Go Diva - We don't want you to repaint the green room walls or remove all the red M&Ms. Go Diva is an opportunity to take photographs of the performance arts. On stage or behind the scenes. Go theatre. Go opera. Go go-go dancing.
  3. Go Dreamy - Remember that time you were doing your final exams and suddenly realised you were naked and the invigilator was Bill Murray? Try to put that to one side and Go Dreamy. This category is for images that are abstract, ethereal, mysterious or downright disconcerting.
  4. Go Arts - Go Diva covers the performance arts. Go Arts covers the visual arts. Photographs inspired by existing pieces of art. Wear your favourite Magritte bowler hat. Melt your least favourite pocket watch. Throw yourself into a stream like Millais' Ophelia.
  5. Go Drinking - In one of my favourite ever opening paragraphs, the father of Kipling's Kim fell to drink and loafing up and down the line. That's probably taking it too far but for this category we want you to abandon temperance and take to drink. Or at least take photographs of drink and drinking. Barmaids and barflies. Shady dives and cocktail shakers.
  6. Go Nuts - Go mad. Go crazy. Lose your mind. Or, for a good number of Utatans, remain roughly as nuts as you already are. You know ... throw yourself into a stream like Millais' Ophelia.
OK. But what does Go Nuts actually mean?
In the words of the much-missed Prince Rogers Nelson:
Let's go crazy
Let's get nuts
Look for the purple banana
'Til they put us in the truck, let's go!
We want you to shed your photographic inhibitions. Throw your camera in the air. Develop your film in a caramel latte. Build your own camera from a Brillo box and a pinhole. Attack the resulting image with sulfuric acid and an ice pick. With Go Nuts anything goes.
Shall we go with words as well as pictures?
This Big Project is all about the photographs. But if you do wish to add a short description then you can go right ahead.
How many times shall we go?
You may submit up to six (6) in each category up to a total of 36.
Can I use archival photographs or do they all have to be new?
No. Utata Big Projects are about creating new work.
Can I use someone elses's photographs?
No, please only submit photos which you took and for which you have full copyright. Model releases may be necessary.
Will collaborative works be accepted?
No. Utata Big Projects are solo endeavours.
Will submissions be edited or published as is?
Whatever you submit, that's what we use.
What size will images be displayed?
Images will be displayed using Flickr's default large size, with a maximum width of 1024 pixels wide.
What tags do I use?
In order for us to pull your photos from Flickr and display them on the Utata project page, you'll need to tag your photos properly. All submissions must use one of the following tags:
    utata:project=gowild
    utata:project=godiva
    utata:project=godreamy
    utata:project=goarts
    utata:project=godrinking
    utata:project=gonuts
Within each of these categories, you can order your photographs using the tags
    utata:entry=1
    utata:entry=2
    ...
N.B. these should be applied per category, e.g. if you submit three tagged godiva and two tagged gowild they should be numbered entry=1, entry=2, entry=3, respectively for the M&Ms and then entry=1 and entry=2 for the spiders. The entry tags are mandatory for without them your photos will not be included in the project.
Can I use other formatting tags?
As for previous Big Projects, tags can mark which part of a description of a photo is seen by Utata: utata:startdesc=[marker] and utata:enddesc=[marker] replacing [marker] with whatever characters you choose as your marker.
Can my photos be marked private?
In order for your photos to appear on Utata project pages, they must be public, not private.
Can I opt out of Flickr's API permissions?
No, in order for us to access your photographs using tags, you must opt-in to Flickr's API permission. If you don't know whether you are opted in or not, go here and check. You must have the "Hide your photostream from searches on 3rd party sites that use the API?" unchecked in order to participate.
Do I have to be a member of Utata?
Yes, you must be a member of Utata and you must have a Utata.org member page, if you don't already. We will be using the name you have indicated on your member page, if you wish your name to be different for the project, you will need to change your member page details.
What is Utata's policy on nudity?
Utata.org only publishes Flickr photos marked "safe" in accordance with Flickr community guidelines. See the following from the Flickr FAQ on Content Filters:
What are content filters?
Where do I set the safety level on my photos?
How do I know if I'm doing the right thing?
