FAQ
What if my entry in the project category doesn't have any text?

An entry in the project category doesn't need to have text, it's just set up to accomodate it if you do. You can have a project which does not include words - just remove all text from the description area of the photo on flickr or use a Utata tag to make sure we do not use the description.

What if all my photos are not the same size and/or orientation for the Stock category?

Your photos will still display and nothing bad will happen, but it just won't look as good or have the same impact.

I have a photo that would be good in more than one category, can I use it more than once?

No. Photos must not be repeated amongst themes. Any photo with more than one project theme tag will not be used in either theme.

Who's selecting the items for the Editor's Choice?

Entries for the Editor's Choice publication will be chosen by the Utata staff.

What if I only have 4 photos for a theme? Will my entry still be shown if I tag those photos?

Yes. Each theme has a maximum number of items per entry, but no minimum. Your entry will show up if you have at least one item tagged. Certain themes, such as the stock category, will look irregular without the proper number of photos, but there are no restrictions, per se.

Do I have to enter an artist's statement?

No. If you have one, a link will show on your project page and people can view it. But if you do not have one, no link will appear and no one will be the wiser :)

What if I don't have a 1024 pixel wide (or long) image as part of my flickr size set?

Flickr has a funny little thing where if a photo's original size is less than 1280 pixels wide, it does not make a 1024 size when uploading but uses whatever you uploaded as the "large" size. This happens rarely and only to people who upload non-standard sizes, generally. If this is the case with a project photo we will take the closest size and downsize it in the browser to 1024 pixels for display in the project.

I have a question - how do I get an answer?

First thing to do is check the news section. We'll be making announcements there regarding the project. Maybe the thing you're wondering has already been addressed, so check there first. We have a handy-dandy mail form that you can use if you have a question, a query or need help. You can also use the flickr group for general project queries.

I tried making a utata:caption (or utata:title) tag but it all fell apart. What's up with that?

When creating a tag with more than one word and thus spaces, you need to encase your tag in quotation marks. So, if your photo caption is to be:

See Spot run.

then you need to type:

utata:caption= "See Spot run."

into the tag window.

Is there a word limit for the project and photo journalism categories?

No hard limit, per se - but for the sake of layout and loading (and making sure our server doesn't melt) it would be best to keep the photo journalism articles to around 3000 words or less and each project page to 500 words or less. If you have something larger, you should query us about making it into a special article or project.
