Text By Greg Fallis

The spiral is a transcendental shape. It's ubiquitous in nature; we see the spiral repeated across scales...from bacteria to galaxies, from DNA to conch shells. It's a shape often associated with mystical properties; prophets in most religions report seeing spirals and helixes in their visions, as have users of hallucinogens. Like all organic shapes, the spiral is omnipresent in art; even prehistoric artists painted them on the walls of their caves.

This lovely helical staircase caresses the eye and engages the mind. We can't help following the sensuous lines upward and inward. Upward and inward. Doesn't that tell us something about why the spiral retains such power?
