Cone Flowers

Wasps sprawl on the lawn drinking in the last dregs that bubble and ferment beneath the skin of a windblown apple. Petals drop and leaves fall in gardens everywhere as the herbaceous border shakes off its summer clothes. The soil cools, there are signs of winter in the air. The first frost, morning mist, low sun that blinds you on your daily commute.

Summer is packing its bags ready to head south for the season. The earth puts on its winter coat of curling leaves. Plants shake themselves and snuggle down underground for their long winter sleep.

But some, like these recalcitrant cone flowers, linger on.
