Then Clara said, ‘Mina, today we shall paint our faces.’
‘Okay mama,’ said Mina. ‘Why, mama, are we painting our faces?’
‘Because today is the Day for the Painting of Faces. I shall be Paul and you shall be Linda.’
‘Who is Paul?’ Mina asked. ‘Who is Linda?’
Paul was the walrus, and Linda was his wife. Can you say goo goo g’joob?’
Mina considered this. ‘No,’ she said. ‘Did Linda love the walrus?’
‘Very much.’
And Mina considered this too. ‘Mama?’
‘Yes, Mina?’
‘If you was a walrus, I’d still love you.’
And Clara smiled and kissed her daughter.
‘Mama?’
‘Yes, Mina?’
‘Goo goo g’joob.’
