This is the weather the cuckoo likes,
And so do I
Me and Thomas Hardy, we have this in common. Did you know Hardy was trained as an architect? That surprises a lot of folks, who only know him as a Victorian novelist — that old, mustachioed gentleman who wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles. But yeah, architect, which makes me think he’d enjoy this courtyard at the Mezquita in Cordoba. It’s orderly, neatly laid out, quiet — it’s as Victorian as a Tenth Century Andalusian mosque can be.
And the weather, ah, who could want better weather? It may not inspire maids to ‘come forth sprig-muslin drest,‘ but the weather looks to be as fine as anybody could ever want. Fine enough for cuckoos, to be sure
And here’s me, looking at this photograph of an orderly sort of paradise, while outside there’s a fairly blustery day announcing that Summer is dead both officially and metaphorically — as dead as the Wicked Witch of the East — and I’m remembering the words of Thomas Hardy’s Weathers, and thinking he got it right.
And citizens dream of the south and west,
And so do I.
