Bus Shelter On Himalaya Marg

“You’re either on the bus or off the bus,” according to Ken Kesey in his classic The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. “If you’re on the bus, and you get left behind, then you’ll find it again. If you’re off the bus in the first place — then it won’t make a damn.”

I have thing for buses and bus stops. The municipal bus is a sort of transportation miracle. It’s true that, outside of major metropolitan areas, buses are most commonly used by the poor and working classes, but the bus stops for everybody — and you don’t need a reservation.

Bus stops take a beating, though. Weather slaps them around, lack of maintenance exacerbates the problem, and then there’s just the sad reality of abuse and vandalism. But the idea of a bus stop is one of the most democratic notions you’ll encounter in the real world. If you stand there long enough, a bus will come. All you have to do is get on it.
