The air is crisp and sharp as a new spring radish. Today we will ride bicycles and talk to strangers. I will be Freya Stark, the great explorer and first Westerner to see the fabled Valley of the Hashishin, and you can be my faithful guide and companion. We will seek out remote regions and uncover secret and improbable places.

Today we shall see lost temples and the ruins of once-great civilizations, and we will dine on rare fruits in the shade of tall trees. We will learn the recondite rituals of ancient craftsmen and solve the riddles of vanished cultures. We will consult no map, but draw our own charts as we make our way through the dust-ridden and rock-strewn passes.

Lace up your yellow shoes. Put on your sturdy pack. Loosen the debit card in your leather wallet. Today we set forth. Today will open before us like an artichoke. Today nothing stands in our way.
