For more information on Fair UseFor those of us interested in Geotagging and location aware photography, it was a bit of a shock last week when Microsoft released some interesting proof of concept videos.
The typically stodgy beast from Redmond Washington is working on a project called PhotoSynth, meant to cull photos from the web and mash them up into three dimensional models of the locations where they were taken.
It's difficult to describe with words, so i would suggest taking a peek at this video, which shows the program's reconstruction of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Though i'm dubious about their practicality in the near term, technologies like PhotoSynth intend to open up new areas in photographic organization and display, adding a spatial dimension to tagging.
More practical and soon to be more accessible are Flickr's own efforts in this arena, which also made a surprisingly unannounced appearance last week.
