For more information on Fair UseEveryone who has photographed a posed group of people has experienced the nightmare of trying to coordinate them all. How do you get them all to stay still at the same time? To smile? To not blink?
On the last question, at least, we now have some help. This year's Ig Noble Prizes, handed out last night, honor two mathematicians who devised a formula to calculate how many shots you need to take to ensure you get at least one with all eyes open.
Put simply, the CSIRO team worked out that the probability of one person spoiling a photo by blinking equals their expected number of blinks (x), multiplied by the time during which the photo could be spoilt (t).
