The Daily Ink is the voice of Utata. Yes, your voice, our voices ... all the voices. We'd be tickled pink if our members helped us define that voice. And this, Utatans, would be your chance to do that.

In the spirit of the season I think [a good idea would be] an ink on how you can donate with a photography slant.
It is a good idea; such a good idea, in fact, that we're going to make a series out of it. Each day this week, the Ink will feature a different photography-related giving opportunity. First up is a primarily low-income high school in Bronx, New York, whose teacher is asking for digital cameras, memory cards, and photo paper:
Photography is a wonderful way to ignite a student’s ability to write and to learn about their communities and themselves. This year I would love to use photography in my 9th grade English & Global Studies High School self-contained, all boys, Special Education Class. I plan on using digital cameras throughout the year.
Projects the teacher plans include a study of emotions through self-portraiture and journaling and an experiment in creating and analyzing documentary photography. To see more details and to donate, visit the project page on DonorsChoose.

This year I had an opportunity (along with some other photographers) for some direct photolanthrapy. We helped a church that offers services (meals, shelter beds, clothing, barbering and access to a public health nurse) to the homeless and the housed poor with a program to help their guests send Christmas cards to relatives, we had people looking up addresses and postal codes, crafters making handmade cards and people helping guests address and assemble their cards. Two years ago they heard about a shelter that was also taking photos of the guests to include in the cards to families who may not have seen them for years in some cases, they tried it but found it to be too time consuming so they wound up disappointing a lot of people, when they didn't do it last year people were asking for it so this year they solicited volunteer photographers, I went on two evenings, one as photographer and the second time to run the printing. It was a great experience and I'll definitely be helping these folks out in the future.
