When flickr rolled out their new layout options, one thing really bugged me.
Okay, two things really bugged me.
One was the thin, grey dotted line that was added between the 'user links' and the top photo[s] on the first photostream page.
The other was the grey background they added behind the sets and collections lists.
Now, just a couple of days later I don't have to worry about these changes at all, because there's already a greasemonkey script to remove those elements.
Then I had a problem with efficiently organizing my photos into sets meant specifically for flickr's new 'collections' functionality .. but there was Utata's own David Wilkinson and his amazing set generator to the rescue.
Only a very small number of people are going to notice, let alone have a problem with these subtle changes and small inconveniences. Nevertheless, 3rd party developers do some great work to fill the gaps in flickr's service.
Obviously flickr can fail and greasemonkey scripts don't solve everything - so I'm overstating the case a little - but flickr is really rounded out by these additions. Frankly, I can't get enough of them. It is these kinds of intangible assets that make flickr a truly robust and reliable place to share photos and why it'll be difficult for another service to supersede flickr through features alone.

I'm not as worried about how I see my page, so much as how others see my page. If only I could impose greasemonkey on other people!
Perhaps I am in the minority?

I noticed both of these problems right away, though I am known for being picky about design. I think the line and gray background will be tossed out eventually.

i know! my guess is that those who are really going to notice and be really bugged by these visual changes are also going to be the types who can pick up gresemonkey and run the script... if they're really THAT bugged by it.
i too think that this changes will ultimately be discarded. even if they aren't, flickr still looks 'right' .. at least to me.
