I am an artist, photographer, and theatre lighting technician living in Austin, Texas. I enjoy alot of different forms of photography... mostly working with inexpensive digital or hand-me-down film equipment due to budget but working to change that. I enjoy art and photography that is about process and technique. I take pictures that catch my eye but I really love making images using a process that captures my imagination. I enjoy looking towards natural phenomenon, including relatively uncontrolled ones, and attempt to harness them leaving a photographic impression, often abstract, but still somehow documentary of the process.
What do you get when you throw your camera into the air? A veritable camera toss phenomenon, for one thing. Fantastic, surprising, sometimes mind-bending images, for another. Looking at Ryan Gallagher's work is somewhat addictive; other than the fact that his images are often stunning, it's important to note that it seems like it's fun to create them.
Yet there's more beyond experiments in kinetic photography. Whether of the symmetry of pipes in a physical plant or the serenity of a giant Texas sunset, a motif of colors and lines continues throughout his photographs. There is more than this, but in many ways, his work presents us with the art of geometry. Math is beautiful, and definitely worth seeing.
