Mike Carvin

Bio

I began dabbling with a camera in 2006, at the suggestion of my college friend Carol Schiraldi (a fine-art photographer in Austin, Texas), and a new obsession was born. What started as a pleasant diversion from the increasingly stressful and uncreative day-to-day life as a software engineer, quickly birthed an artistic passion and desire to do more with my photography.

In December 2011, I decided to plan my escape from the drudgery of the computer industry, and to dive headlong into photography as a future career. I enrolled as a part-time student at the Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts to further develop my skills and make a go at pursuing my passion as a career. As luck would have it, the very next month, there was a sizable lay-off at the company where I worked for over 18 years. This proved most joyful and rapturous for me, as I would now be able to attend classes full-time, and be able to graduate in September 2012, a full-year sooner than planned.

I am a highly visual person, and enjoy capturing the design elements – lines, forms, shapes, light and shadow – as they occur in the everyday world, much of which is often overlooked as mundane by the passer-by as he goes about his daily routine. I see structures as more than their intended function, and upon closer examination of them, they reveal to me an aesthetic that I find both intriguing and appealing. Architecture is a beautiful blending of art and engineering, and is rife with opportunities for me to share with the viewer my “art of the mundane”.

Testimonial

Mike is just starting out as a photographer but his vision is true and his work shows a strong historical sensibility, in part due to his preference for sepia-toned images. His images reflect his love of nature, sense of humor, interest in arts and crafts, and unique reflection on life. With every new project and photographic adventure, I enjoy seeing Mike grow as a photographer and refine his creative technique. It's fun watching his stream because we get to see an artistic vision unfold before our eyes.
