I initially broke into photography only as a means of supporting my endeavors in photomanipulation. But as I ventured further into the realm of mugshots and landscapes (and everything in between), I discovered there was a magical quality to taming a camera and getting it to do what you wanted it to do.
Inspirations came from near and far. From just observing the world around me, and also actively looking at other peoples' work (photographs, paintings, films... anything really). I'd have to say my background in science has taught me to appreciate how the small things come together to make a bigger system work, and while this may not always shine through in my photography, I definitely have it tucked away somewhere in my mind at all times.
As I grow as a photographer, I'd like to learn how to say more with what I do. While the pretty picture of a cat or flower is always aesthetically pleasing, I also want to make something in a person's mind react to what I've shown them, whether it be in contemplation or humor. That's really what I'm working towards.
And even when my photographs don't say anything more than, "What a cute widdle puddy-tat!!" I still enjoy taking them. It's relaxing, and fun. If it ever stops encompassing those two qualities, I suppose I'll stop, but I have the comfortable doubt that it will always include those things for me, and my appreciation for the craft will only grow with time.
You cannot forget Josh's background when looking at his photos: nature is never too far, even when picturing very human subjects. Each picture is a little moment of poetry – cute, refreshing and simple at first glance but much more subtle, complex and thought provoking when you take the time to look a bit further. I really enjoy those layers.
If you take even more time you may even learn some useful stuff: squirrels are about to rule the world, no intermolecular forces no photogenic water drops, cows and sheep are 'mate (I have to get such a chess set !!!).
The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible. --- Oscar Wilde
