When i was a child in the sixties, my father was a serious amateur photograher and a mountain climber. After his death, when i was in high school, i took a great interest in photography and film, and took some good solid classes in black and white darkroom work. However, i was always ok and not great, and i needed to be talented in my own opinion at that age to be able to do it. I took a few classes in my college years, and never felt i "got it" but learned a lot about light and exposure.
My sweetie got me a digital camera several years ago, and i was slightly interested. It was not until my pals at The WELL began to post about Fotolog that i got over there and fell in love with the medium again, and committed to shoot, post, and comment daily. I did that, every day, for almost a year. I recommend it, but i am taking it a little easier now, sometimes not shooting new stuff, and taking posting breaks, even.
Fotolog's capacity problems drove me to Flickr late in 2004. I was captivated by the creative abilities of the community, and the social opportunities of tagging! Because my career is in online community, i think alot about the social dimensions.
My current interests include composition in urban and natural settings, storytelling and photojournalism, and a sort of irony or dilute humor that's just part of my outlook.
I feel a little guilty that i can't spend the time to be as social and attentive on Flickr as i'd like. And i have a secret desire to do a little bit of filmmaking next. May as well honor those childhood dreams.
Gail Williams is a master of beautiful photographs of quotidian things, and yet she is equally at home in vast natural landscapes with stunning skies. She sees - and draws our eye to - reflections, shadows, textures, convergences into shapes, and the odd unpredictable element in large or cluttered spaces. From the abstract to the decidedly concrete (including abstracts of painted concrete!), Gail always surprises and delights.
