Capturing an image or a subject implies a kind of blunt force trauma of the arts. As if everything was going so well until the guy with the camera scrobbled the subject before disappearing into the night.
Sam's photographs do something different: They hold the image, the subject, in a moment of meaningful beauty or activity or both. Whether it's a still life, a portrait or a candid shot, his pictures seem to exist mid-breath and I half expect them to start breathing when I'm not looking.
These are pictures of mindful and careful interruptions, the images of a gentle and observant thief of time.
