Susan Sontag said, "to photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed. It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge -- and, therefore, like power."

My experience of photography doesn't feel like this at all. For me, to photograph is to yield to that which one cannot exert one's will over, to be privileged to be able to see the image. One is appropriated, rather than appropriates.
