the winning ball

Liz West

Although many people have read Casey at the Bat, few people realize that he redeemed himself a few years later. In 1890, Casey was once again the last hope of the team in a tight game. Less cocky now, as well as less famous, he was no longer the golden boy. However, he still had what it took. He knocked the ball out of the park and won the game. His young daughter retrieved the ball and saved it for future generations. It was recently rediscovered and publicized on the Antiques Road Show, which is where I photographed it.
