Some summers I really mean to get to the beach, and for no clear reason it just never happens. This year I get a jump on the whole thing and head out to Long Beach the day before the official summer season begins. It's a Friday, so it's not all that crowded; it's the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend, so it's not that empty either.
After the excursion I climb out of the Long Island Railroad station at Flatbush, and the heat in the city is like a thick damp blanket.
