Vulcan Irazu, a presently inactive volcano, is located at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in Costa Rica's Central Mountain Chain. The coloration of the water is the result of the chemicals released when the volcano was active. The sparce plant life is the result of a combination of the high altitude and the chemicals in the soil. The area is very cold, isolated, and desolate.
