Light Pollution Study

Phillip Chee

Two view of the winter night sky demonstrating the effects of light pollution in urban areas. The top photo is from my backyard in downtown Peterborough. The bottom photo is on a farm 20 minutes south of Peterborough. Both exposures were 30 seconds at f/2.8 but the top photo had an ISO of 100 and the bottom of ISO 800. That's 3 extra stops of exposure I can do before the sky glow overwhelms the camera's sensor. In fact, I can go 5 to 6 stops before I reach saturation. Longer exposures mean more stores and deep sky objects can be recorded.
