Sophie's World

Linus Gelber

My friend Tess, playing the role of Sophie in Flash Flash Bang Boom, the new collaborative play by the Circle Theater of New York, surveys her bedroom, or - depending on how deep you like your imagery - her ideal of a bedroom.

Three couples meet and fall in love in the course of the performance, and they do it in very different ways. One couple is tentative and insecure; one is combative and narcissistic; Sophie and her beau fall quickly in caution-to-the-winds love, and find themselves suddenly with baggage they did not intend, at first, to carry.

I come to see the show, and in the course of hanging out with the cast and crew in the bar down the way we set up a quick photoshoot for the following afternoon. "OK Tess," I say, while I tinker with the camera and set up this shot. "Act with the back of your head."
