Charging Station

Linus Gelber

In blacked-out downtown Manhattan, after the rages of Hurricane Sandy have passed, city workers are out clearing the streets and working on the broken pieces: the subways, the wiring under the street, the pockets of water underground making maintenance difficult. There is food to be found here and there (but no coffee, so far as I saw), and a few tourists and residents wander in the streets.

This van runs a charging station for faltering electronics - cell phone batteries are a major issue a couple of days after the storm, even though many of the cell towers have exhausted their backup power and there is very little signal to be found.

I ask this woman if I can take her picture as she charges; she grabs her child, and makes a victory sign for the camera.
