Thursday walk 510: Lunar corona over campus
Thiophene_ Guy
My Thursday walk started an hour early, as Wednesday came to a close. While walking across campus I noticed the moon had an intermittent corona due to passing clouds. This phenomenon is due to diffraction through randomly oriented ice crystals in the cloud, unlike a "moon dog" which is a halo arising from refraction through ordered crystals.
Processing note:
Daylight white balance was selected for accurate moonlight color. Curves adjustment was used to brighten the clouds slightly while maintaining a dark background. Contrast was reduced, then Topaz Clarity was used to selectively enhance the low contrast elements.
