My Thursday walk took place just up the road from my house today at the Monocacy National Battlefield, a newly-revamped Civil War historic site. You never used to be able to access the farm site itself, but only caught a fleeting glimps of it from acres away across rolling corn fields where the battle once took place.
The National Park Service has just finished a major renovation here and construction of a new visitor center and the Best Farm site is now open to the public. This morning I had the whole place to myself, which made the silence and solemnity after what happened here even more profound.
