The word landscape is from the Dutch, landschap meaning a sheaf, a patch of cultivated ground. The word entered the English vocabulary of the connoisseur in the late 17th century. When we talk about landscape photography, these days we we don't just mean traditional landscapes of flowing fields and winding rivers ... no, no ... we mean the urban landscape as well. Those scenes that unfold around you that capture your attention and interest. Landscapes are the universal language - they explain much about us as tribes of people and put where and how we live into a unique context.
