Coronation Pool is one of the most striking pieces of architecture I've ever seen in a city like ours.
The structure is an ebony tent with reflected windows tilted to the sky. It is nestled in simple park, surrounded and overwhelmed by some of of Edmonton's busiest and most pot holed roads.
It is a forgotten gem, lost in endless sprawl.
Inside is the echoing cacophony of whistles, waves and laughter. Part of the personal appeal of this building to me is the clever structural engineering and the unique character of the place, but also personal remembrances of coming here with my classmates for the swimming section of our P.E. class.
It was recently renamed the "Peter Hemingway Fitness & Leisure Centre" after the architect, which i think is a fitting way to celebrate this unique figure in Edmonton's architectural history.
