One of the first things I learned was to create silhouettes by shooting into the sun, a very easy and dramatic effect for a beginner to achieve. A teacher I recently took a class with suggested that keeping some of the detail in the shadows is more interesting than having the silhouette completely blacked out, so that's what I tried here. I especially like the seagull on top of the chimney and the faint lines of the fence, meandering down the hill.
