still

Bombay Beach at sunset. The silence is audible. This whispering stillness has weight and mass. Not another human in sight or within earshot. No wind disturbs the mirror surface of the water. Even the hundreds of birds are silent. Sunset brings a golden glow and a mirror reflection that suggest a huge downward void. These submerged power poles tell a tale of a community forgotten, suffering indifference and long term neglect. The heavy stillness fills me with sadness and longing, and a reverence that also somehow inspires me.

I take leave of the Salton Sea a changed person. I will go back.
