A few years ago I accidentally found this book, and I still believe it's one of the most interesting reads I ever had:

While the Italian edition is most probably unavailable, Amazon still has it on sale here: "Clean and Decent: The Fascinating History of the Bathroom and the Water-Closet".
I would advice you to get hold of a copy and read this book, as you'll realize how recent our idea of cleannes is - and how very peculiar it is...
