A pilot project for new materials, car structure and shorter development times, BMW builds some 8,000 Z1s - each with a monocoque steel frame, synthetic external skin and electrically-controlled doors which sink down into the sides of the car. The Z1 attains cult status with its sensational, cart-like road holding; with its 2.5 l engine (171 hp/126 kW) it can reach 230 km/h effortlessly.
