Christine Kelly

Photography is a free expression for me.

While I've taken formal photography courses, including my first one as a journalism student back in the 80s, I'm largely self taught and explorative.

I believe photography is as much an experience of the moment as it is a shot. You can't shoot unless you see, and you can't see unless you are looking.

Life goes on, the moments get bigger. I am trusting, trusting in my vision, trusting in the pace of life, trusting in the quiet moments where I can shoot things just because I want to.

Artist's Statement

I am fascinated by environment, specifically the natural environment and its intersection with humans. How have we negotiated the natural terrain? I grew up in a big city, and now, after several years of living in a rural setting, I'm exploring the affect of open space on the individual.

In my series of landscape shots, I looked for examples of human touch on the environment. I searched for evidence of how human beings have, in their desire for progress, come to an agreement of coexistence with nature. Using black and white images, I focused on the contrast between the built world and the natural world.

Living in a big city, interestingly enough, one can sometimes lose touch with foundation, with how things came to be. Our family came to be from a union of two people who had grown up as farm kids. Our benefit was the modern world. While this series suggests an agreeable relationship between humans and the environment, I hope too that there is evidence of the struggle of gaining one's ground, so to speak. While it allows us to be sustained and even elevated, nature does remain majestic, and we are as much a part of it as anything else.
