Artist's Statement

I am new to photography. All my life I have labeled myself as "not artistic," having defined myself as a writer at a very early age. Now, approaching the category of "late in life," I discover that whether I'm artistic or not, taking pictures gives me a kind of pleasure that I have not experienced before in any artistic medium. I'm willing to devote time and energy, learning and growing and discovering myself as a photographer.

I'm just beginning to discover what it is that moves me, that causes me to reach for the camera and say "whoa." Living on the Central Coast of California as I do, I find myself very attracted to land/seascapes in general, but particularly to those that include agriculture of some kind. I love how the cows graze on steep hillsides, and how the fields run right down to the sea. I love how you can stand in one spot and smell rich, plowed earth and the sea in the same breath. This is what I've tried to capture in my Utatan landscapes.
