I am a biologist, a naturalist, a teacher, a craftswoman, a wife, and a mom of several furry-children. These are the things that my photography shows.
I shoot with a slightly broken Cannon S1IS. I hate it sometimes, but mostly it serves. I shoot my daily life, what I see, what I happen upon. To everyone else this means I shoot a gluttony of dogs at the dog park, dogs at agility, and dogs at home. They are my best friends and I find them beautiful.
For me, shooting what I live is the important thing. I love fast and flowing action shots. And I love candids. Which is another reason there are few people in my stream. Nobody I know is willing to forget that my camera is there.
Occasionally, I get a shot that I think is wonderful and on par with some of the photographers I admire. I hope that someday I will have most of my shots be that way.
When I first picked up my camera, I intended to use it only to record and remember the important events in my life. Though I continue to use photography as a means to that end, I have begun to also use it as a means to convey my thoughts about the world. In particular, I like to explore themes that allow me to portray humans and animals and the relationships between and among them.
For the Utatan, I have chosen to explore a variety of themes.
In the Stock Photography project, my idea was to portray the form of the African Pygmy hedgehog in such a way as to heighten the viewer's tendency for anthropomorphizing. I would like the collection to provide an image of her as a being rather than an "it".
In the Portfolio project, I display a series of images of dogs participating in the sport of dog agility. I take great joy in participating in and in photographing dog agility. I would love to begin marketing my photographs to other agility enthusiasts.
In Landscapes, I have created a series of images to explore the relationship between a silhouette and the environment. To me, silhouettes tell rich stories.
In Portraiture, I have created a selection of images of my best model, Laika T. Spacepuppy. In each she is balancing a fruit or vegetable on her head. There is no great philosophical meaning to this, it was just fun to do.
