During Ross's bike tour their guide Gilad informed them that the reason so many things are painted blue in Israel is that the color repels flies. A brief search did not turn up any scientific papers or cultural artifacts corroborating this unlikely claim. :-)

(Gilad apparently also told the group that religious Jews believe secular Jews get reincarnated as fruits. It sounds like he was a fun guide.)
