White-faced Heron
The white-faced heron, originally from Australia, is now the most common heron found in New Zealand. They feed in aquatic environments and wetlands, feeding mainly on fish, tadpoles, frogs, insects, spiders, etc. I often see herons here in my front garden in pairs, I assume they are breeding pairs. Our pond and long damp grassy area must be the perfect habitat.
I was quite surprised the first time I saw a heron in our garden. They are such majestic looking birds and a welcome visitor.
