Escaping from . . . or Escaping to?

On The Rocks

I am not a fan of vacations. I like my house and my neighborhood. When I am working, I enjoy what I do. When I'm not, I am happy out in the back yard tinkering with one of the five old cars that I own, or mowing the lawn and trimming the trees, or finding a new place to photograph in the Los Angeles area, or just sitting around the dinner table talking to my wife, or curled up in a chair reading a book, or taking a long walk. I don't need to escape from all the things that I enjoy. I don't get stressed out much. For some reason, I don't have whatever it is that causes people stress. I just enjoy what I am doing while I am doing it, and don't worry about it too much outside of that. So, what is it about driving for two and a half hours just to get there, sleeping on the ground, and bumping around on dusty mountain roads, risking life, limb and vehicle, that is so appealing? Nothing, except that those activities, added to everything else we do over the weekend, help make it fun. Contrasts are what make life, art and photography so interesting.
