Show and Shine
The Manx Dune Buggy Club is a group where we all have a least two things in common, a great respect and admiration for Bruce Meyers, founder, owner, inventor of the Meyers Manx dune buggy way back in the late '60's, early 70's, and a love of Volkswagen-based, fiberglass bodied dune buggiies. A lot of the group members, myself included, have built their own cars, so much of the conversation is car tech oriented, but there is a relaxed, friendly, accepting and polite atmosphere throughout the weekend as well. Nothing is rushed. There are set times for the various activities: Show and Shone at 8:00 a.m., Driver's Meeting at 9:30 a.m., and Head for the Hills at 10:00 a.m., but those are easy to deal with and the only "have to" is that if you are going on the off-road run, you have to attend the driver's meeting. There are three difficulty levels for the day's adventure: A Scenic Pavement Run, An Intermediate Off-Road Run, and a Most Difficult-Likely-To-Tear-Up-Your-Car Run. There is no pressure to do any particular level; you choose which one you are the most comfortable with. The last couple of years, I've opted for the Scenic Pavement Run for various reasons, but this year I'm going on the intermediate run, since I have a new engine in the car and am feeling confident. They have even developed a technique to keep you from getting lost on the trail, so you don't need a map, you just follow the leader and try to avoid the biggest of the rocks. It's just good clean fun and the only worry you have is keeping your car on the road and undamaged.
