The Engineers

Who’s Shooting Whom?: Last weekend I bumped into an art project being composed in the middle of Second Avenue. A guy was taking a photo of a wall. Behind him, a girl was taking a photo of the guy taking the photo of the wall. Behind her, a guy was taking a photo of the girl taking a photo … but you get the picture.

What’s academic in that context is spontaneous and creative here in FreeWheel‘s verité capture. This is a c’mere shot – when I first saw it I went around telling people to c’mere and look at my monitor. In a dark venue redded with indistinct bodies, an invisible photographer stabs light at a musician crowded so far to the edge of the frame that he can hardly be seen. The instant is fleeting, meticulously caught, and unconventional, and for a moment I didn’t understand what I was looking at. When it penetrated, I laughed aloud. It’s a chewy game of figure and ground, deftly making music out of discord. Linus Gelber
