City Girl

Our first sideways glance at this haughty beauty is voyeuristic. We seem to be peeking in on an intimate moment of a person far more sophisticated than we could ever hope to be. We’re drawn into the image by the cock of her wrist, the slope of her shoulder, and the arrogant line of her aristocratic jaw.

This is no living sophisticate. This is a modern statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of crafts and commerce. After two millennia she still gazes down at her worshipers from the heights, distant and unattainable, inhuman and unfeeling.
