Ferris Wheel At Sunset

The Ferris wheel was the highlight of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, America’s answer to the Eiffel Tower, belle of the 1889 fair. While one goes round, and one does not, while one is permanent and one is not, they remain connected; often seen against fading dusk, holding lovers connected by shadow, dreams held fast by steel struts and human ingenuity.

The Ferris wheel rising about the fairground and into the sky has become as much an iconic American symbol as apple pie and Sunday football and this one, mostly empty against a gradient sky, seems to beckon; promising a ride through layers of color and air and into a rarefied place where dreams can come true.
