As photographers and people who study photographs, we’re quick to attach meaning to an image. In a postmodern world meaning is a fluid and flexible concept, destructured and decentered and detached. An image means what you think it means, and everything is a metaphor for something else. We see these overturned stools and our privileged perspective allows us to understand they are a physical symbol of ‘closed.’ Nobody can sit on an overturned stool.
To the person who put the stools on the counter, though, it simply means less fuss to mop the floor.
