The poet John Ashbery tells us that the soul establishes itself. He asks, “But how far can it swim out through the eyes / And still return safely to its nest?” In this wonderfully refracted self-portrait by Michelle Thompson we are given a startling soul’s-eye view of the photographer.

I suspect most of us feel fragmented in some way, but it’s rare to see such an overtly visual representation of it. Despite this obviously disjointed view, however, there is a sense of cohesion here. The pieces all come together. And the soul never really leaves; the soul “has to stay where it is, / Even though restless, hearing raindrops on the pane, / The sighing of autumn leaves thrashed by the wind, / Longing to be free, outside, but it must stay / Posing in this place.”
