Lifting

Right out of a Bogie and Bacall movie, one expects to see the hood ornament of the Dusenberg as it roars around the bend and into the scene. Majestic in its simplicity, here we have a tree, a sky, a fence and a field – four ordinary objects made wondrous by the perspective, the sense of motion and the clarity of black and white.

Bogie had driving goggles, Bacall a white silk head scarf. The car was silver. The road was winding and Tommy Dorsey was leading the band in I’m Getting Sentimental Over You. The grass swayed gently in the wind, the tips of the roadside wildflowers bowed in the wake of the fast moving car and the tree stood resolutely, a living witness to the fading strains of nev – er thought I’d fall …
