Late afternoon and the sunlight slanting in. Shadows sharp as sabers. Lunch crowd is long gone. The talk is low-voiced and languorous, punctuated by the soft clatter of coffee cups and the rhythms of stirring spoons.”
Time doesn’t stop; it relaxes. Stretches out, pops its knuckles and leans back. It’s the long pause. Soon…too soon…offices will erupt, the rush will begin. The rush home, the rush to happy hour, the rush to the drive-thru window. Everybody rushing somewhere, to someone, away from something, rushing and rushing.
But not yet. Not quite yet.
