Pastel and Ice
Catherine Jamieson

This is innocent art created unintentionally, unsubstantial as a shadow until it was witnessed by the right pair of eyes. Here we have the photographer as alchemist, taking the base metal of a simple homespun scene and transmuting it into something rare and precious.

Using the viewer’s mind as an alembic, the photographer transforms this carefully composed image into brilliantly distilled memories. She presents us with a picture of linen hung on a line and magically transmogrifies it into the comforting smell of fresh-washed laundry dried in the crisp, cold air. She shows us a winter scene, but uses the pastel colors to evoke memories of spring. The visual is transformed into the mnemonic.

On a winter day an anonymous woman hung out her laundry unaware that through the alchemy of art it would be turned into gold.
