If Art is the sacrifice of function in the service of form, then women’s shoes are undeniably Art. These confections for the feet are audacious in their disregard for practicality. Their entire existence…from the design table to the manufacturing floor to the shoe store to the closet…are a testament to the ineffable yearning of the heart to be free of the tyranny of utility.

Western culture is steeped in the notion of an artist suffering for his Art. Women’s footwear may be the only instance in which the consumer of Art is the one who suffers.
