Gazing Ball
For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophet-bards foretold. You won’t find prophet-bards in a shop window in Durham, North Carolina and this crystal ball doesn’t foretell the future. Indeed, it barely reveals the present. It seems to have settled in some version of a sepia-tinted past.
But the present always intrudes, dragging the past along like a reluctant dog on a leash, plodding inescapably toward a future it never quite reaches. The telephone wires of the present will some day be as archaic as the crystal ball of the past. So it ever was, and ever shall be. Prophet-bards or not, the days are hastening on.
And who knows what will be in the shop window tomorrow?
